Year 8 - STEM Work Shop
On July 9th, our Year 8 students who remained in school took on the Squash Tomato Challenge. This exciting, hands-on activity allows participants to develop their own solutions to a transportation problem faced by farmers living in the mountainous regions of Nepal. The challenge is based on a Practical Action project conducted in Western Nepal.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated their knowledge of science, design technology, and mathematics. They worked diligently as a team, each taking on different roles and responsibilities. Despite facing challenges during testing, they collaborated effectively to solve them.
Working in teams of five, the students had to ensure their tomatoes travelled safely from the mountain down to the bottom. At the end of the day, they shared their solutions and reflected on the story of Suchana, an example of how designing a ropeway could significantly improve her family's quality of life.
